The Temple Pavilion acts as a social connector amid the new backdrop of distancing and community building among congregants. Nested within a three-sided courtyard garden, the intervention works materially to expand the visual field of the court while amplifying the movement of light, air, plants and people.

The new stage and infrastructure accommodate performances, worship, lifecycle events, lectures and movie nights. A modestly sunken amphitheater and circulation resolves multilevel access with the site's topography and a careful calibration with existing building entries, exits, and pathways. The building's main social hall acts as a weather-dependent audience chamber expansion with operable glazing and a floor level that operates as a cross-aisle, effectively providing sightlines to the stage over the outdoor seating area. Introduced on the cuff of this sunken performance area is a raked lawn area for informal gathering; blankets and family picnics.

Fitting the diverse programmatic and experiential demands into the space available results in a functionally dense ground plane and landscape; resulting in an experiential intimacy that we embraced. As a foil to the programmatic texture at your shoulders we pursued an atmospherically elusive materiality for the amphitheater shell. An aluminum canopy provides performance infrastructure, AV, Lighting, and shade while its reflectivity works to magnify temporal shifts in the landscape.
